How to Form the Subjunctive in French

All types of the subjunctive described here use the same endings, except for Type 3 (read on to find out what 'Type 3' is!).

Regular verbs

• Take the "ils" form of the verb and remove the "-ent" ending
Ex. jouer > ils jouent > jou-
 
• Add the subjunctive endings:
-e
-es
-e
-ions
-iez
-ent

Example -	Jouer
	... que je joue
	... que tu joues
	... qu'il joue
	... que nous jouions
	... que vous jouiez
	... qu'ils jouent

Irregular verbs

There are three types of irregular verbs in the subjunctive:

Type 1 - Verbs which have a spelling change in the indicative

Ex. boire, prendre, enboyer, voir, devoir

• To get the stems for "nous" and "vous", one must take the "-ons" ending from the indicative "nous" form, then add the subjunctive endings.
• To get the stems for the rest of the persons, one must take the "-ent" ending from the indicative "ils" form, then add the subjunctive endings.

For example:

Boire

Indicative	Subjunctive
Je bois	... que je boive
Tu bois	... que tu boives
Il boit	... qu'il boive
Nous buvons	... que nous buvions
Vous buvez	... que vous buviez
Ils boivent	... qu'ils boivent

Venir

Indicative	Subjunctive
Je viens	... que je vienne
Tu viens	... que tu viennes
Il vient	... qu'il vienne
Nous venons	... que nous venions
Vous venez	... que vous veniez
Ils viennent	... qu'ils viennent

Type 2 - Verbs which have irregular stems but use the regular endings. Here is a table of all of them:

Type 3 - These two verbs truly are irregular, with both irregular stems and endings. These just need to be learnt. Luckily, there are only two.
